Franklin Graham has taken another step off the deep end. He’s echoing (once again) shocking comments President Donald Trump made in a tweet Sunday. In his tweet, Trump said that if the Democrats impeach him it will cause a “civil war.” So Graham, like the good right-wing Christian that he is, ran with it in a Facebook post to his eight million followers, The New Civil Rights Movement reports.
Graham also used the opportunity to engage in a little fear-mongering that Democrats are going to “take your guns.” Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke is the only Democratic candidate who’s even mentioned this and all he was referring to are assault weapons.
That, however, didn’t stop Graham from doing a little hand-wringing. Something that many right-wing Christians excel at.
“The Socialist Democrats’ message to the United States of America is: 1. We’re going to take your guns and 2. We’re going to impeach your president.”
He correctly credited Dr. Robert Jeffress as the author of the “Civil War” claim, noting the extremist pastor had “warned on Fox News that this could cause a ‘Civil War-like fracture in this nation from which this country will never heal.'”
“I don’t know about that,” Graham added, “but I can tell you this can lead to conflict that nobody wants if they continue down this road.”
In a sense, he’s right about that because the percentage of Americans who’d like to see Trump impeached is increasing, The Washington Post notes. Support for his impeachment has jumped from 37 percent of registered voters last week to 47 percent according to a Quinnipiac University Poll that was conducted from Friday to Sunday. A CNN poll also showed 47 percent of American adults supported impeachment.
And Graham is definitely calling for a civil war if Trump is impeached or if Democrats institute a gun buy-back program, notes NRCM’s David Badash.
“Pray that God would change the hearts of Democratic leaders in Washington and that they would see the dangerous road that we’re on,” he wrote.
And his followers responded — to the tune of 7,000 comments in less than one hour.
But it’s really no wonder that Graham and his ilk are laughed at by anyone who can think critically. Trump is fomenting unrest with his constant lies and seditious acts, as rightly noted by retired Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Peters in this Newsweek article.
In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Peters had this to say:
“Trump is inciting violence against the legitimate government of the United States and the constitutional order,” he said. “And Anderson, that is a grave crime. You can argue about the meaning of treason, what constitutes it, what doesn’t — sedition is very clear cut.”
Let’s be clear here: Graham is an anti-LGBTQ bigot who loves Trump beyond measure and these two are both dangerous men. Hopefully, if Trump is impeached, Graham will disappear. But I’m not holding my breath on that one.
